help with searching date fields

I have been browsing some other posts but don't have and haven't seen a good solution to exactly what I need.
Running Sugar 5.1b, Apache, PHP 5, Mysql 5 etcc on Linux.

We have a customer birthday field and marriage date field. Customer would like to be able to search them (report would be nice but I'll take a listview of them) all customers with birthdays this month or anniversaries. To be able to do this I need to search on just the month. I have added the search between module (works nice!) but stilll need only the January dates no matter the year.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to modify the search files to search only on the month or for the betweens ignoring the year.

I saw that thread.

For birthdays, There are many customer with birthdays in Jan but from multiple years. I need to modify the search so it picks off the birthdays for Jan only. The between search will get from Jan for one year. Need from all years. Would like to be able to search for "01" in the date field instead of 01/01/yyyy to 01/31/zzzz.
Don't want all the other birthdays between the two years!

Hope this helps. Do I need to convert the date field to a text field os I can search and compare?
