Hope I havent screwed my upgrade

Hi

I tried to do a manual upgrade to my 5.2.0 site using the 5.2.0 to 5.5.1 file from downloads.

I had a problem with the site being hijacked and needed to upgrade it anyway.

I know it was hijacked because when calling up the site I got a screen and a half of weird UTF characters whereas everything was working a week ago.

So first I uploaded the new files and then ran the MySQL code using MyPHPAdmin which went okay.

I then tried to run the script for pre-install (following the information in the documentation wiki) I got a message saying it was not a valid entry point, so I disabled the htaccess and tried again , same result.

So I thought maybe I didnt need to run the pre-install and tried to login to site as normal.

I got a message saying 5.5.1 files can only be used with a 5.5.1 database which I thought I had updated using the appropriate SQL from the scripts folder.

AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH Heeeeeeellllllllpppppp...........

Please has anyone experienced this. I am certain I followed the instructions but no luck.

Oh and before you ask, yes I did backup the old database and the old site software

What you are describing as characters the result of hijacking sounds very much like an issue relating to using the wrong version of PHP. Older versions of 5.2 didn't support newer releases of PHP and could cause the behavior you describe.

I would restore the backup and focus on making sure the environment is setup correctly before anything else.

Problem is I dont really have any control over the environment (shared hosting) so I really need to sort out what has happened with the upgrade. I assume that its not the php version as the system was working two weeks ago and the admins tell me they have done no upgrades to the php version.

However I will check the compatibility, they may be lying and sneaked one in.

Do you know of a more comprehensive manual upgrade description than the few lines in the wiki?

No and it is bound to vary from version to version, which probably explains why the wiki only makes minimal mention of it.
