how can you throttle down mass emails to allow all to go through?

If you email all your 3500 people on your email list, whether a email merge or a newsletter, can you adjust the timing of sending the email in chunks so it doesn't get blocked by your SMTP server?

For 4.5.1 there is a simialr setting in Admin -> Email -> Email Settingsw

Thanks Malcolm. It asks how many to send with each batch but can you specify how often each batch is called or is that in the cron settings somewhere?
