How to display custom fields from Account Module on Opportunity Module

Hello,

I have a customized fields called ''company code'' in the Account tab and would like to display this fields on opportunity module. Some people said if I set the the two fields with exactly the same property (length, display, etc) the two fields would be auto related namely I add company code in account module the opportunity module would display the code for same account's opportunity. However it doesn't work. What shall I do about this?
