How does IMAP works

I'm configuring IMAP on a SugarCRM system. It's working for a bit, when I choose for 'check mail' I only recieve unread mail. I want to import all the e-mail on the mailserver of course, so I can work with sugarcrm, outlook and other applications. Is there somebody who has the same problem? Or is it something typicall for me.

Not sure about the other mail servers but gmail has option which gives the access to the mail client to download all the mails.
