I dont think that ther is any limit so as many as you need

Last month I tested 100 custom fields in Accounts for a customer.
SugarCRM itself has not problems ... BUT ... your browser needs a real great amount of memory if you open the studio to design the editview or detailview.

In addition to Kuske answer, some databases don´t support more than 100 fields inside the same table.
