How to 'retire' opportunities and remove them Opportunities List

Once an Opportunity is 'lost' how does one convert it from an Opportunity to a non-current stage so that it no longer appears in the Opportunity List of current opportunities?

This is better handled by means of the search interface. If you are more concerned with Opportunities whose stage is set to "Qualified," for example, use the search feature to only search for those records. All other opportunities would be ignored and omitted from display. The end result is that unless you specifically search for all opportunities or "Lost" ones, they wouldn't show up in your ListView.
