Importing CSV from Excel Mac-->formatting issues

Hey guys,
I have been trying to import a small number of records in CSV as a test. I have attached image of screen shot to display my problem. These characters are not present in the excel/csv file before import but then once contacts migrate they suddenly appear. If i were to import hundreds of records like I will be doing it would be a huge pain in my a## to manually remove symbols. Is there something I can do going forward to prevent/correct this? I had this same importing problem with Salesforce before I made the switch. Would greatly appreciate your help

There are "advanced options" in the import process. You could try out different settings for "File Encoding" (or check if you can set file encoding during the export on Mac).
