Inbound email settings hanging

First off, I'm running a Mac Intell 10.4.7(OS X T.i.g.e.r) with Apache 1.3.31, php 5.1.4, Sugar 4.2.0d, and mySQL 5.0.22.
I had no problems with the Sugar install and setting up outbound email went fine, but when I fill in all the slots for inbound email and attempt to save the mailbox, Sugar just hangs there doing nothing until the server times out. Then I have to reset Apache and restart the browser in order to access Sugar.
I'm sure all my settings are correct and the test button confirms them (pop3,ssl), but I just can't save the mailbox.

I have had problems like this... I have a load of IMAP accounts, some of them work when entered into Sugar and some of them don't. I've got loads of problems with all mail in Sugar, to be honest, I'm very disappointed with mail support in Sugar, it really pulls it down.

Hmm...
Well, I found that if I created the email account at the same timie as the user was created, the user has an email box.
The email account seems to get their mail, but I can't add an email box to an existing user.
