Increasing value in a field that's filled in by code

Hi all,

I've installed Sugar and I think it's a wonderful app, comparing to other CRM systems.

Anyhow I'm a newbie here, and not very skilled in programming. Therefore I'd like to ask somebodys help. I've developed an Assets custom module, and I'd like to make a field named Asset Number to be filled in automatically when you create a new Asset. I mean if I create a first item this field would be "0000001" then within creating a second item should be filled with "0000002", etc...

Could you please give any idea how to deploy it?
