First did you create the database and user in mysql first? if not you need to create the database and user before proceeding. Also if this is the first time using creating a sugar installation you should allow the droping and creation of tables.

I created the database sugarcrm and a user sugarcrm with full privilages. There was no difference when I attempted to install SugarCRM.

Is it possible to hack the process and do the database setup thru mysql?

I have verified that I can use php to access the mysql database.
