Join data from another table without subpanel

I am trying to figure out how a module could display fields from another module (or table) as if a JOIN were used (requires coding or can it be done in MB or Studio).
If i set up a relationship between modules i can use a subpanel to display related information from the other module which is great but...
What i am looking for is plainly to be able to add to list or detail view information looked up from a table outside the module (or outside sugarcrm).

Sugar CRM CE Version 5.5.4 (Build 1246)
Linux/Apache 2.2.8/Php 5.2.4/Mysql 5.0.51a
