It's very simple, really...

I've created a field. I've created and populated a drop-down. I have lots of records with one of these options in them. Time passes...

Then I am told I need to have a completely different list of choices. No problem! Says I! I'll just change the contents of the list!

But when I remove on option from the dropdown list that has been used much, the worst thing happens:

(and they are NOT kidding!) I am stunned that no part of this message comes up in any discussion area on google...

So what is the best way around this situation? How can I create a new set of choices without whacking the filed?
