It is not possible to make accounts the default landing page without modifying the code.
A simple work around would be adding an Account Dashlet. You can access the same information in the dashlet as you would in the Account ListView. Does that work?

Actually if you go to Admin -> Configure Tabs and make Accounts the first module on the List, Accounts will be the default module when login, as per Wynn note on this bug.
