Making it Upgrade-safe

I am working on SugarCRM Reports module and I had to modify some of the code to allow for a date field to look up for Next 90 days. For this I had to update the "include/generic/SugarWidgets/SugarWidgetFielddatetime.php" and "include/generic/SugarWidgets/SugarWidgetFielddate.php" files.

I really don't want to modify these core files and am looking for an upgrade safe approach. I tried creating the same files in the custom directory in the same hierarchy, but it doesn't work. Can anyone help me in this? Is it really possible to make it upgrade safe?

I believe it only works on version 6.0.
