    Default Multiple Departments single installation

    HI,

Can I have one single SugarCRM installation and support multiple departments. I have Marketing, IT, Finance departments. They all belong to the same company but different departments. I would like to setup SugarCRM in such a way that Marketing folks do not have access to IT infrastructure. I don't even want them to see the different users in IT department and vice versa.

This is basically like setting up different companies with single installation. I also need this because I have couple of companies for which I want to use SugarCRM. Administrators, CFO, CTO are same for different companies but users are different. How can set this up.

Just a pointer to a document also would help me and I greatly appreciate any help.

    Thanks
    BinnyG

You'd be better served by having separate installs for the various departments. The teams and roles functionality will allow you to restrict who can see certains bit of data, but it won't keep users from seeing the full list of users, perhaps other bits of data that haven't been brought to the forefront as of yet as well.

Personally, my opinion is that if they are going to operate as separate businesses, they shouldn't be sharing one database/install. What happens if you spin off one of those departments to be completely removed (physically) or you wish to sell some portion thereof? Things become messy when attempting to untangle that big ball of twine.

Most importantly, Sugar does not have anything built-in beyond teams (Pro/Enterprise only) and roles to address this need. Thus, your mileage will vary as to how effective of a solution it might be without investing in some customization work.

I'd be wary if I worked for a company that is that segregated. In some form or another those departments should overlap in everyday business. Shouldn't they in Sugar as well? If you can't trust your own people to the point of even knowning who is working in another department...yikes.

LoL. Thanks for the information. I do understand and I do trust my workers. But because of the nature of our business all departments work independently and there is no need for them to look at other departments. This is ideal solution. If you say I have to live with one department looking at other departments data, sure I can live with it but definetly this is not an ideal solution.

Thank you guys. Maybe I created confusion here. Lets forget about departments. Lets only talk about companies here. Can I have one single installation of SugarCRM and have multiple companies use it. Each has their own administrator and one administrator group which controls the whole installation.

Angel has a nice point, what if I want to sell business. Tho I do not have any intention to sell it but I like your idea of having different databases.

Now that I understood that opensource edition doesn't help, is there an open source module which I can use to achieve this? or a open source module which I could leverage on and built on top of it?

    Moses, thanks for your link.

    Thanks

    Hi BinnyG,

We have multiple companies on our Sugar instance but they are partners that share data with us to some point. Some are hidden from them, some aren't. This is possible with some sort of Teams implementation. TeamsOS is a nice package for the OS version. We use RoleOwner to give multiple teams access to individual data records.

For multiple stand-alone companies I'd highly recommend using separate databases. The pros are having the ability to have an admin at each company, complete data segragation (more secure, isolate data issues...), etc. There are a number of hosts that frequent the boards that have this sort of setup so it's definitely possible.

    Good luck!

I don't know which goal you're talking about. Of getting some time for a vacation?
