Newbie question regarding email

If I choose not to use the email interface within SugarCRM, can that be hidden?

Can SugarCRM be setup to send email to my users current company email addresses when certain things happen, like a follow up phone call that I have scheduled for the day?

Yes .... go to Admin>Configure Tabs

drag the modules you want to hide to the right hand column

workflow actions like emails predicated on actions will require some custom code probably in combination with Process Manager from SugarForge

Yes and yes. You can hide any module either by using roles or by using the "configure tabs" feature.
Sugar can send emails (provided the system email account - SMTP or sendmail - is configured) if a record has been assigned to a user.
However, this feature only make sense if there are not too many such events because your users won't read the mails anymore.
