I set up a template related to the CASE module and uploaded it. I'm trying to do the step by step of mail merge with the manual - however there is no MAIL MERGE button anywhere.

Make sure that you've enabled the Mail Merge option under Admin > System Settings. There is also a similar setting with your login's preferences.

I thought mail merge does not work in community edition
Which version do you have?
Not so.
It should work as long as you have the Word plug-in. I believe the only recent change that affects this is that you can no longer purchase the Word plug-in for Community. Thus, if you had purchased it before the change, it should still work.
