I am having an issue sending emails.
I have my mail transfer agent set to smtp and filled in the SMTP server.
The default SMTP port is 25.
Should I change to another port to get my outgoing email working?

Hi there, you contradict yourself in this post.
The first line states that you have an issue receiving email and then you state you have an issue sending email.
SMTP would be for outgoing so I'm going to assume it's outgoing you have an issue with.
When you setup the settings, what happens when you click on the test connection ?
Usually port 25 is for SMTP but you should check with your email provider and see if they have it on a different port. Does your server require authentication ?
What about firewall, it could be blocked there as well.
I figured out the issue. I had the outgoing mail transfer agent set to smtp. I changed it to sendmail and it now works.
Thanks for your help.
