Default Overriding default quicksearch for an existing module

    Hi,
I would like to modify the search conditions the quicksearch lookup uses for the Account name entry in a module in sugar 5.5.4
I have searchdc quite extensively around the quicksearch capabilities on the forums, and most are around adding this to a custom module, not altering existing one.
In the current situation, I would need to filter this based on the user who is logged in, I have now the certainty I could do so by modifying /include/QuickSearchDefaults.php, but I fear this would lead me out of an upgrade safe path.
Is this my only choice or is there another way to do this?
