Default page cannot be displayed after login

I have installed SugarCRM on SLES 9 s390x with MySQL 5.0.27 and PHP 5.1.6 and when I login with admin I get a page not found error using IE 6 and a blank page when I use FireFox 2.0
This happens using SugarCRM 4.5.0e and 4.5.0f.
I have reviewed two threads pertaining to this issue and the fixes in those recent threads do not apply here.
I am not using LDAP as an authentication mechanism nor did I see an explicit choice for it in the install.
I have looked at the Authenticate.php in modules and the Location: index.php is correct.
I need to get this running for an evaluation of ...... vs. SugarCRM.
I have ...... running and I thought the SugarCRM install would be just as straight forward.
Any help would be much appreciated....thanks

Verify the permissions on your sugarcrm folder. Your webserver user must be without permission.

The permissions have been set according to the documentation....
cache, custom, data, modules and config.php are all writable....

I had a problem similar to this, I changed the default directory that the sugar install went to to my d drive. After I did that I got a blank page. I checked the httpd.conf found that the document root directory was set right... Strike one, so I went to my apache logs and read through them, lo and behold there was an error there. Come to find out in the php.ini (if your using windows) there is a line that restricts where php can view files. If your apache document root isn't in the list. Then you will get a blank page. Look for open_basedir = in your php config file and make sure that PHP can see the directory your files are in. I may be leading you down the wrong path but I know that it happened to me right after I set up my install. If you give us a little more info maybe we can beat out the problem faster. Good Luck! Let us know if there is an error in your apache logs. Its always a great place to start!
