    Default Permissions and installation

I've just installed SUSE 10.1, php5, MySql 5 and Apache on a new server and am trying to install sugar. Except for a little experience with esmith a few years ago, I'm a Linux novice. I need to give write access to apache to a few files and folders in sugar in order for it to run. I'm using Gnome and had no problems with changing the permissions for config.php or custom files. I created a group and added some users (services), then selected properties on the folder and changed the File Group to the new group.

First, the permission change did not go down stream even though this was a direcotry level change, I had to change the permisisons on lower level files too?

Second, how do I get the permissions to apply to sub-folders and files? I need to change the permissions for modules, data and cache -there are loads of folders and files.

Any advice on this, much appreciated.

Problem solved. In case anyone else comes across this, it cannot be done thorugh Gnome. You need to run this command
    chgrp -R newgroup path/
