Default PHP Mail() instead of smtp?

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but my shared hosting server will not allow me to send mail from the server directly using smtp - instead they suggest to use PHP Mail(). I believe this is common for shared hosting packages (1and1 also operate the same policy) in the UK. I already had the same issue configuring roundcube mail client, but fortunatately that app allows you to configure to use PHP Mail() instead (as opposed to designating an SMTP server) which works perfectly. Is this possible in SugarCRM?

    Thanks, Paul A

@Paul. Did you ever find a solution to this? This is exactly what I'm looking for, too
