Default Possible Duplicate Contact - creates blank record

We upgraded our 4.5 installation to a clean new 5.2i. Now if we enter a contact with the same first and last name it is generating a "Possible Duplicate" message.

    1. It is listing ALL of the contacts in the database on the duplicates page.
    2. Pressing SAVE to create a duplicate record causes it to create a blank contact.

After messing with the system for several days we found that we had to enter an bogus email address before the system would allow the contact to be saved. It did NOT report a duplicate.

Most of our contacts do not have email entered and that seems to be why they were reported on the Duplicate list. The system was matching the blank email value.

Any thoughts on how to correct this issue"

Did you have any customisations on your 4.5.1 install .... custom modules, custom code, custom fields?

    Did you follow a process?

    Backup 4.5.1 files and application

Upgrade from 4.5.1 to 5.0 - TEST, TEST & TEST - and then test again

    Backup 5.0 files and application

Upgrade from 5.0 to 5.2 - TEST, TEST & TEST - and then test again

If you didn't and you have the 4.5.1 backed up ... it might be prudent to start again ... does this problem start at 5.0 or 5.2? .... are there more problems waiting down the line?

Upgrading from 4.5.x to 5.2 is non-trivial where customised instances of 4.5.x are concerned - IMHO
