Is it possible to edit layout and sizes of components and the "sections" in Studio?

I'm using Studio to customize the content of the Contacts module. More specifically, I'm adding custom fields/components within the section of EditView that originally holds only the "description" text area (by section I mean the closed-in panels holding the various fields, in this case headlined "Contact Information", "Address Information", "Description Information" and "Portal Information") .

The problem I'm having is that in that particular section ("Description Information"), the right column is very narrow, making the layout of my custom fields very lopsided. In contrast, the "Contact Information" section is split nicely down the middle. I've noticed that moving the big "description" text area over on the right-hand column makes that column fairly wide. But I don't want that text area on that side, and I don't know how to create other text areas (or any custom field) of that size. So my concrete questions are:

1) Is it possible to edit the layout of the sections (width of columns, number of columns etc)?
2) Is it possible to designate the size of text areas and other custom components?
3) Is it possible to create components (e.g. headlines) that span several columns?

you can do all three things by editing the template file (HTML files: EditView.html, DetailView.html) directly.

Will those changes "stick" or will they be wiped out the next time I use Studio to change something else?

As long as you don't edit/move that particular field in studio, you should be fine.
