problem with customizing drop down lists

hello,

i have a small problem with customizing drop down lists.

lets say under Leads Status, i remove the 'New' option and replace it with a field i know want defaulted called 'Initial Contact'

everything is fine in the backend, but when i go to the home page of my crm now, nothing shows up under 'My Active Leads'. how can i fix this?

anyone? basically the default 'new' lead status was deleted, and i'm trying to find a way to get it back.

I'm trying to customize the lead status too, but i can't find out how to do this.
Did you already find out how to do this?
I would really appreciate your help.
