Problem With Long Email Extensions

I'm facing a problem with long email extensions, especially the ones in .travel, which happen to be quite frequent in my environment. It looks like there is a control somewhere in the code (maybe at several places) which will control that the email extension is no longer than 4 charaters. Has anyone come accross this problem, and found a solution (even a workaround) to it?
