Problem with template variable in CE 5.5.2

I am trying to get a simple variable to work in an email template for a campaing. I follow the steps set out in the documentation with the following setup:

Dear $contact_user_first_name,

But when the email is sent the name is not populated. any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

the variable you seek is $contact_first_name

use the dropdown in the template to populate the variables and you can't go wrong
