Problem upgrading to v 4.5 - Could Not Connect:MySQL error 1193

I was using Sugar CRM v4.2.1 and downloaded the SugarSuite-Upgrade-4.2.1-to-4.5.0.zip to install the new upgrade. I uploaded it and clicked to install. I clicked on the Commit button and the next screen showed:

Could Not Connect:MySQL error 1193: Unknown system variable 'NAMES'

My server info:
PHP Version 4.4.0

Where do I start to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think you need to upgrade MySQL to 4.1.x that is the least supported version as of 4.5.

Thanks for your note. I checked and my hosting company isn't planning to upgrade the MySQL anytime soon.

How do I rollback the upgrade to v 4.2.1, and save my data?

Yes, my provider's MySql version was too low for v4.5 so I moved to Siteground.com.
