When I try to create a contact from a vCard, none of the information from the vCard is recorded. It creates a blank contact.
Does anyone have any ideas why?

Check which vCard format you are exporting. I believe sugarcrm does not support v3.0. If you are a Mac for example go to the address book application, open the preferences for that app, click on vCard icon and set the export format to v2.1.
Somewhere on the forum I explained how to upgrade to v3.0 and modified the import code to work a bit better (at least on the mac).

I forgot to mentiom. Sugarcrm does not support multiple vCards in a single file without my patch mentioned in the previous post!
Also.... there is no syncing with the address book so before you do your import you will need to do a little planning.
The problem is on import don't expect sugarcrm to be very smart. You either import them all as targets, leads or contacts. If you import them all as contacts then you *cannot* convert them into accounts or leads. Incredible stupid.
Also sugarcrm will not automatically create accounts if the vCard is marked as a company. So you may want to export vCards in groups and import them as leads to be converted (using the sugarcrm ui) into both contacts and accounts.
Also use targets for seed lists, leads for sales leads, and contacts/accounts for people you are already doing business with.
I wish I had know this before starting with sugarcrm... it would have saved a lot of grief.
The import functionality apparently was done as a bare minimum.

Unfortunatly, I work on both a mac and a pc.
In both cases, with the 2.1 format of Vcards, they do not get imported.
I will try to apply your patch anyway and see. However, if you have an idea of why this might be please do not hesitate.

Ok so I tried your solution.
I get the following error:
"error retrieving record. this record may be deleted or you may not be authorized to view it."
