Product Catalog custom fields -> Product

When you create a new Product, you select the Name from the Product Catalog table. I have created several custom fields in the Product Catalog that I want to automatically feed into the corresponding Product custom field when I select the Catalog entry. It works for the pre-defined tables, but not for the custom fields. I was told that it would if the fields had the same name, but it is not working. Is there a way to make that work?
