Default Quick Question Regarding 'Default' Field Properties

I did a quick search but surprisingly didn't come up with much.

I am creating some custom modules and using the 'basic' type. The basic type provides me with some default fields like 'name', 'created_by', etc. I have some use for these fields, however, their properties are not editable. For instance, I'd like to use the 'name' field but need to have the 'audit' option enabled.

I'd really like to use these default fields rather than having to create my own and have a bunch of NULL values in the default fields.

Is there any way to override the properties of these default fields?

    Thanks in advance!

I think the properties for these fields can be changed in the modules vardefs.php file.

Would this be in the custom/modules/... area or the modules/... area? Also, what are the possible ramifications of changing the vardefs file? (I assume SugarCRM doesn't want the default field properties to be edited for a reason.)

I have changed these properties without any ramifications. That is not to say this is necessarily the best way of doing it as I have only been using Sugar for a few weeks. I guess these changes also would not be upgrade safe.

I was just thinkging about the whole upgrade safe aspect as well...

What vardefs.php file are you editing? The one filed under custom/modules/... or modules/...? I actually just opened the vardefs file in either location and could not find the default fields listed...only the custom ones that I created.

I edited the one in modules/... God point about only the custom fields being in there. Sorry, I just remembered I had modified the vardefs.php for the Opportunities module as some of those fields weren't editable and I presumed it would be the same for a custom module. Apparently it isn't.

So the question is still out there for anyone who might be able to help. Is it possible--and are there any negative consquences--to change field properties of the default fields of custom modules? I'm talking about things such as the 'audit' or 'required' properties on default fields such as 'name.' The option to change these is grayed out in Module Builder.
