Quicksearch not working

Whenever the quicksearch is used with a contacts field, results are found but when the user tries to submit the form there is an error saying "No match for field: Contacts". Any suggestions on fixing this?

Did you install any additional package?
Is Sugar installed under Windows or Linux?

SugarCRM version is 5.1
There aren't any additional packages installed.
It's a Linux installation.

It happens in any module I add a one-to-one relationship with contacts using the studio.
It also happens in a clean installation.

steps:
I used studio to add a one-to-one relationship with contacts to (for example) cases
then I create a new case and use the new field to find a user listed in the sample database
Then try and submit the form and get the "No match for field: Contacts" error

It only happens with the Contacts one-to-one field not any of the others like accounts or assign to

Also, if I'm able to get past the error nothing is displayed on the details view for that field
