Search / Query operator for "Not"

I have searched the forums and found that the "%" can be used as a wildcard in searches. What I can't find is the "not" or "IsNull" type operator.
Like if I wanted to do a search for a client record without a last name. or where the last name is not equal to "Smith" ; or where "Sync to Outlook" is not checked. Is this possible?

Any search, I suppose. Specifically I am referring to the Advanced Contact Search in Contacts.
