    Unhappy Slow email module

    Hi all,

I am using v6.1.4 under windows (using Stack Installer) and I recently started using the email module for everyday tasks.
I noticed it is very, very, very slow! Deleting an email can take anywhere between 1-4 mins to complete, making it very difficult to work with.
My email is set up using a Google Business account...

    Any thoughts?

The unfortunate part about this problem is that there really isn't much within Sugar itself that you can modify to make it work any faster.

The times I've seen its usually the result of an environmental problem or even the email provider, although GMail should work, so it is most likely the former.

Some environmental factors that seem to impact it:

    - Low memory amounts assigned to PHP
    - Using old versions of PHP
    - Antivirus on workstation

Unfortunately there is no definitive answer. You'll have to play around with it a little bit.

    Hi angel, thanks for replying...

My current memory limit is 512MB and I am using PHP 5.2.5, do you think upgrading to 5.3 would help?
As for AV, i tried disabling it (NOD32 business edition) but I did not notice any change in performance. the rest of sugar modules are very fast and I also have wincache enabled...

Anything else that just might improve performance? I would hate to have to switch to Outlook or a webmail system since I would lose a lot of functionality (like history etc...)

Upgrading PHP is definitely worth a shot.

Another thing, you haven't specified which browser you are using, but try using Chrome.

Do you have any sort of firewalls enabled or email scanners? If so, disable them and try it.

If Outlook becomes the remaining alternative, you can use one of the Outlook plug-ins to record emails into history.

OK, upgrading PHP proved to be a bit more difficult than originally expected, due to server restrictions. We also have other PHP applications that do not (yet) support PHP 5.3

Antivirus and anti-spyware applications are installed, but have been disabled for testing purposes, but we still get the same results...

The problem remains with both Firefox and Chrome...

We really wouldn't like to use Outlook at this point, since we are trying to have a truly on-line system that can be accessed from anywhere, and using Exchange with Outlook Web access is not an option we would like to consider...

I have long decided not to use Sugar‘'s email module for everyday use because of this speed issue. Since I managed to connect my google apps account I use it to log important emails once a week. However, if it was possible to make it work faster I would definetly use it as my primary email client. The question is, has anyone been able to make it work at a speed similar to gmail/yahoo? If so, I would try and do any necessary hardware/software upgrade. But if not, I wouldn't bother...

What I've witnessed is that it is not very scalable. Meaning, even if you do get it to perform at a reasonable level of performance today, over time, the performance degrades and there aren't many options to help get you back to where you were at.

For example, I know that if you have a lot of email folders, it is a painful experience.

Good point Angel, do you know whether its the same across CE, Pro, etc? I'm using CE now and I wonder if this module has been improved for the paid editions.

It is pretty much the same across the board from what I've seen.

That actually touches on a point that comes up from time to time in that people like to infer that there is some conspiracy at work on the part of the Sugar dev team where they make the commercial versions work better than CE.

I've never seen any evidence of such behavior and the accusation is complete rubbish if you ask me.

I played around with the email settings and looked at the log file. I solved (somewhat) the slowness issue by removing the excessive amount of emails (100s in some of my IMAP folders) in some folders. Especially the TRASH folder. After emptying the trash folder, the delete time went from 30-45 seconds down to about 3-5 seconds.
