SMTP / Sendmail Issue

First off, SugarCRM seems like a wonderful application, I can't wait to use this in a production environment.

I am having problems sending mail. I have read through other troubleshooting steps that other people have suggested but none of them worked. I am able to receive mail fine but cannot send it out. I'm using the SugarCRM vmware image and it works very well. I have the Admin settings set to sendmail since that is what everyone says to set it as and the user account as smtp. I've tried swapping and mirroring the two and here is the results.

Sendmail as user settings.

Faster and claims to send. Tailing my mail server log file and nothing shows up. no type of connection.

SMTP as user settings (port 6000 is my outgoing mail server port)

About a minute to respond and claims that there was an error sending mail. Tailing my mail server log file sees a connectiong but the actual mail isn't sent. Tail the maillog on the sugarcrm machine and it says timed-out.

Error emailing:SMTP Error: The following recients failed: email@mydomain"

I am able to send out successfully using a mail client such as SeaMonkey with the same settings I have placed in the SugarCRM settings. anyone help?
