Sugar timestamp off by 1 hour

I am using sugarcrm 3.5.1 with a mysql database. There is a field in the contacts table called date_modified which is time stamped when I update an entry so that I can sync with other systems.
My problem is that the timestamp is out by one hour.
This only occurs in mysql - sugar displays the date modified correctly. The system time is correct and the sugarcrm time is correct so I cant think of anything else that could be causing this error.
Can anyone help?

Also I should probably mention that the field date_entered in the same table is also out by one hour. This is also displayed correctly in sugarcrm.

I believe Sugar stores date information in GMT format, it is shown correctly in Sugar according to the users time zone.
