Why does it not populate fetched_row??

We have a monthly script that goes thru opportunities and updates them. This was causing one of our custom fields to be over written. After 4 hours of tracing code I found that the script was causing a workflow trigger to execute.

This workflow was set up to run when $bean->value = somevalue and $bean->fetched_row[value]!=somevalue

Have since fixed the bug
Just wondering insight from everyone

Which database are you using?
Which is the length of this field name?
What is the relationship between fetched_row and getList? I could´t understand that.
