Importing products is easy enough, but what if that source db (same db mfg as sugar's) is managed outside of sugar, creating the problem of not just adding new products, but also updating the properties of the existing sugar system.

If we can put men on the moon, must this all be done manually?

take a look at tools like Talend. Define a job there, export the created java code and have it run on an app server. That is the pragmatic solution. if the interface needs more logic code it in Sugar or you external tool natively.

And always keep in mind that also the rocket that put the men on the moon was built manually - if you believe that they have been on the moon and it was not all just a fake. ;-)
