I was having ongoing irritations getting the system email to work -- as many have stated in earlier postings, all mail server settings were verified and correct, and I could send an email from a user account, just not from the system account.

The one thing I didn't change was the from address -- I had it set as do_not_reply@ similar to what the auto-populate of the system install provides. Changing that to the same address as the email user name (in our case, info@) allowed the sugar system to connect without fault to the mail server.

Thanks to all the senior contributors of the forums for continuously asking throughout the varous forums what the sugarlog file was reporting. The AH-HA moment came when I finally opened the file for myself.
