Timeout adding custom fields

I am new to SugarCRM and am just trying to get started. I wanted to add some custom fields to the account screen. When I do I enter the information but nothing comes back. Eventually I get a blank screen after my Apache timeout setting (300 seconds) elapses. However, the field is stored. Any idea how to solve this annoying problem?

I am using it on my personal web server, but I am also evaluating it for potential use by the agency I work for.
