"Suddenly" is sort of vague. Did you or somebody else do anything which might have caused this "suddenly"? And: When you say the files open perfectly directly on the server you mean the cache/upload directory?
You might want to try the usual things like switching browsers, run a quick repair, check whether the database entries (the IDs and mime types) coincide with the physical files in upload.
I'm afraid there is not much more I can contribute at this point
