Default Use Studio without Administrator rights?

Is it possible to allow non-admin users the ability to use the Studio, or is this strictly hands-off for a good reason?

I have a Sales team who want to be able to add fields, change the labels on text boxes etc., but there's no way I want to give any of them Administrator access... been there before and ended up with a completely unsupportable system that I couldn't upgrade.

Add the user in question to a security role and then within the role's definition, allow the user "Developer" or "Developer & Admin" access to the modules you wish for them to be able to manipulate.

I don't recall offhand the extent of capabilities said users are given, but I know you can make a number of basic customizations such as defining drop downs, etc.

Yes. Setting the Role to "Admin & Developer" allows the user get
Studio, Drop Down Editor and Workflows.

So most of the things that you are looking for can be achieved by this assignment.

Ah, but apparently only in Professional or Enterprise - not Community Sugar?
