I know this looks stupid - but I downloaded and it asked me for username and password to get started - which I never put in. For the life of me I cant get this done. Does it have something to do with the MS SQL that I already had on my computer?

I am not sure I understand your problem.
The install process prompts the user for credentials on two different occasions. One is the database login credentials, i.e. MSSQL/MySQL username/password, and the second occasion is to define the password for the default "admin" user for SugarCRM.
You can't install without providing the database credentials, so I am not sure how you would have been able to do so without providing that info.
If you can't remember what you put in, take a look at your install directory and you'll find a file called config.php within that directory. Open it with a text editor and you'll find a section with the database credentials.
If you are referring to the Sugar "admin" user password, there is not much we can do other than to reset it to something else, but you need access to the database in order to do that.

I was just trying to surf around on the community version to see if it would work for me. this feels like an advertising page for the advanced versions rather than a home page to try the community version.
thanks,
