variables not working

I use a template I made to send emails from SugarCRM 4.5.1e, but I notice often when people reply, the variable did not insert.

I have it inserting the contact's first name followed by a comma and then the message. Often when they reply it just has a comma at the top. Not always, but consistently to the people it fails on. I look at their contacts and they have first names and I don't see any problems.

I have the same problem in Version 5.2.0c, except all my test emails come out without any values replaced
