If a field is audited, then when you are on the Detail View of that module, when you click on "View Change Log" - you will see any changes made to that field, who made them, and when.
the audit feature will allow all changes (who, what, when) to the field to be stored in a history which can be viewed in the record's change log
say you have custom fields for contacts and you want certain ones audited... by selecting that option, all changes made to those audited fields will show up when you select the "view change log" link at the top of a contact's record view page.
hope that helps and if anyone else can clarify or correct what i said, please feel free to chime in.

No need to apologize, RFMRobert. Better to be redundant than nonresponsive!
Thanks for the input.

Is there a way to change which regular sugar fields to audit? Specifically I would like to audit changes to a contact's address.
Hi wjohnson, you can enable standard fields for audit. You do so in the respective module's vardef.php file. The attribute I believe is "audited"; just set this to TRUE for the field(s) in question.
Hope this helps,
Andy
