Default What should I expect with upgrade?

I posted this question in another forum, but realized that this is probably the best place for it.

I am new enough to Sugar that I have not been through an upgrade cycle yet. So, I have a couple of questions before I "pull the trigger" on an upgrade.

I have several modules installed: ZuckerDocs, ZuckerReports, OrgChart, and PowerProspecting. I would prefer not to loose them in the migration.

What can I expect? Will upgrading Sugar usually break the modules? Will I need to wait until the modules I want to use have been upgraded themselves and reinstall them after upgrading Sugar? Am I best advised to wait for 4.5 to "stabilize" and go through a couple of bug patches before I commit to an update? Are there other problems or issues I need to be aware of and prepared for?

Could some of you "old hands" give me some guideance on this?

    Thank you.

First thing you should do is Backup your current SugarCRM directory, Backup your database. The key word being BACKUP everything.

Second, Test install on a test environment with your backups.

    1. Copy the production files to a test directory on the webserver.
    2. Create a test database,
    3. Test user for the test database with full privlages for the test database.
    4. Copy the production database to the test database.
    5. Edit config.php in your test directory:
      1. Change the dbconfig to test database and test user with the test user password.
      2. Change the site_url to point to the test directory.
    6. Test the sugar test installation to see if it works.
    7. Run Test upgrage on test installation directory.
    8. Test all functionality and extra modules.
If everything checks out after this then it is safe to up grade your production system. Always remember BACKUP first before performing an upgrade.

I hopes this helps everyone from making fatal mistakes. I will also be adding this to the wiki next week with a more fleshed out details with examples.
    Cheers,

Thanks for your reply. I will take your advice.

Reading between the lines, it looks like your answer to my question is that I should expect the upgrade to break stuff. If that is the case, how do I get my installed modules working again? If I must wait for updated modules anyway, might I just as well wait until the modules are updated before starting to upgrade Sugar?

I would like to be able to move to the new 4.5 Sugar. But, I don't want to do it immediately if it is going to cost me more time and trouble than it is worth. In other words, I am trying to assess the risks and rewards.

Can anyone help me do that by providing a bit more information?

    Thanks.

IMHO, wait until the modules have time to upgrade before you upgrade your version of Sugar CRM. Some things (functions) have been deprecated in version 4.5.. That will not only save you time and headaches, but it will also provide time for Sugar CRM to upgrade (patch) bugs for the 4.5 version. It's my gut feel at this point that 4.5 is still a bit buggy. It's such a big change from the 4.2 version.
