What is sugarCRM made of? (components)

newbie question, I just moved in to support sugarCRM in our company. we have different versions of sugar (4.0.x)
I want to move or upgrade all of these to a single version for easy maintenance.

Now my qustion Is,...Is sugarCRM just made up of the collection of files (under sugarcrm dir) & its database (sugarcrm db)

if yes, then can i just back them up (files & DB), restore to a different machine (and adjust config.php), upgrade it there, test and just copy it back to the production machine? One of the reasons for this is that we can't perform any tests on the prod machine and access to it is very,very limited.

tried the upgrade wizard on the copied sugarCRM. it says "Invalid upgrade" or "Invalid upload"

You copy all the fiels to the new server and restore the DB, the Upgrade Wizard is there for upgrading Sugar with new versions or patches or other add-ins.

That error may mean that you are applying the upgrades/patches in the wrong order. Also, there are some upgrades that allow you to jump several patches. Sometimes you have to try different files. It also possible that you have a permissions problem on Linux. chown -R [user].[group] will usually fix that, where user and group are the Apache user and group respectively (generally, either apache.apache or nobody.nobody).
