From all installations on the same virtual machine ubuntu 7 server was the fastest.

But it needs the most configuration effort.... (e.g. issue of linux rights)

WindowsXP PRO with apache/mysql is following shortly behind that.
There you should convince your AntiVirus program that the SugarCE directories should not be scanned on each access.

The hardware should have 2 CPU cores at least.

And if you use Windows do not install more than 2 GByte RAM!! Never!!

For me CentOS 5.4/Apache/mysql has halved CPU use over Windows 2003 server.
You can expect Linux OSes to be faster/cheaper/more reliable than Windows, though my
    Windows was the "Chilean" release

I also like the traditional LAMP stack myself, but tend to lean towards Red Hat/CentOS.

Like Kuske, my experience with Windows/Apache has also been a positive one and I'd put it right behind LAMP as well.

If given the choice, I'd stay away from MS-SQL, especially if you need to use UTF-8. While not bad by nature, there just doesn't seem to be enough users out there using MS-SQL and this tends to result in odd issues nobody else experiences and one is left at a bit of a loss as to what to do. The difference with MySQL is that the sheer volume of users that use it on that platform day after day means there are many people whose experiences you can rely upon for troubleshooting similar problems and resulting in a more widely tested product. In some cases, that same phenomena leads to a faster discovery of problems, usually while the product is still in beta.
