Where are custom fields defined?

I am trying to find where the custom fields are defined? I cannot find any vardefs files for custom fields for modules, such as Leads.

Can anybody let me know where the custom fields are defined?

The definition of all custom fields is stored in database table fields_meta_data. From here all needed php files are generated e.g. if you call an admin-repair funkction.
